Richard & Jane’s Wedding Photography At Hotel Du Vin Birmingham

Hotel du Vin, situated just off Colmore Row in Birmingham, has everything to offer when it comes to planning the Big Day. Whether it’s a small party, a conference or wedding, you’ll be guaranteed a sophisticated venue as well as an elegant selection of wines with an exclusive fine dining experience. I was honoured to provide Richard and Jane’s wedding photography at Hotel du Vin Birmingham on a wonderfully sunny May afternoon last year. This great Victorian building was once an eye hospital, and Richard and Jayne showed they have an eye for style when they chose Birmingham’s Hotel Du Vin for their wedding. (Sorry for the bad joke!)

I began my day with the groom, best man and best boys – who had a lot of fun dressing up in their dickie-bows and stylish navy suits with some very cool Marvel action-figures for company. Next came the button-holes, all individually labelled and in a brilliant array of colours (the perfect complement for their smart outfits). Soon Jane, her Mom and the bridesmaids arrived, grinning from ear to ear as they organised the wedding bouquets and prepared to change into their dresses. Jane’s bouquet was beautiful, full of pastel colours and tiny delicate bunches of Gypsophila. The bridesmaids wore lovely light blue dresses, and the bride looked gracefully elegant in her white wedding dress, a simple headband and a small floral piece to complete her up-do. The bridal suite was heavenly.

As the girls made their final preparations I headed down to the reception area as the guests arrived and enjoyed pre-wedding drinks at the bar. Naked cakes have become very popular these last few years, and Richard and Jane’s was both simplistic and naturally stunning as it stood tall on a glass cake stand. The cake itself was adorned with pink and purple flowers, and dainty white Gypsophila to match the wedding bouquets.

The array of individually styled rooms gave me a delightful variation of tones and lighting to work with when it came to providing Richard and Jane’s wedding photography at Hotel du Vin Birmingham, and the Krug dining room was no exception. As the guests poured into the chic mirrored hall, I took the opportunity to photograph everyone’s excitement. With mobiles at the ready, friends and family watched as the groom sat eagerly in a high-back leather chair, grinning as he waited for the bride to arrive.

At last the bridesmaids entered, followed by Jane and her mom. The vows were made, the rings exchanged and a few happy tears shed. Surrounded by flowers and a collection of wine bottles lined up against the tall windows, Richard and Jane signed the registry books as newly-weds and posed for a few family photos before enjoying a glass of refreshing champagne. In a flurry of blue confetti the couple exchanged hugs with their guests in the courtyard. With time before the wedding reception, I explored the venue and soon found the best places to take a few personal photos of the couple.  The grand staircase in the foyer offered the perfect set up, with a wide window letting in plenty of natural light.

For the wedding reception Richard and Jane opted for a scrumptious wedding breakfast of lavish dishes served with classic French wine. Table layouts are always very important when it comes to organising the seats of family and friends, and at this wedding there was a fun, personalised touch. The names Caterpillar, Teacups and Rabbits might not mean anything to some, but add in Clocks and Mad Hatter and you’re delving straight into Alice in Wonderland. A gorgeous array of vintage items decorated each centre-piece, accompanied by photographs of loved ones and jars of sweets.

It’s always a delight to photograph the speeches as they’re always guaranteed to produces smiles, laughs, tears and perhaps a few embarrassed faces. As evening drew near, Richard and Jane happily cut into their wedding cake before retreating back to the bar area for drinks and, of course, dancing. Overall I really enjoyed my time doing wedding photography at Hotel du Vin Birmingham, and it was a real privilege to be a part of Richard and Jane’s celebrations. Thank you both for inviting me to capture your special day in photographs I hope will provide you with many happy memories for years to come
