On a bright late summer’s afternoon last September, I was invited to do Jude and Chris’ wedding photography at The Bond, Digbeth. Set right in the heart of the creative community in Birmingham, a friendly neighbourhood of free spirits and creators, The Bond offers a unique and contemporary venue steeped in a rich and industrious heritage.
I arrived mid-afternoon, just past 3 o’clock. Chris and the guests were enjoying pre-wedding drinks from the Bond Café, and Jude soon arrived with her bridesmaids ready for the civil ceremony which was to take place in the Waterside venue. Jude and Chris walked down the aisle hand in hand surrounded by fairy lights and vibrant summer florals. They looked wonderful together, completely at ease and emanating happiness as they said their vows and exchanged rings. With the marriage certificate signed they walked out into the sunshine and down The Canopy steps to be met by flurries of biodegradable confetti.
Group photos are always fun to do and this urban venue offers plenty of space to fit everyone in the frame. Intermittent rays of sunlight combined with picturesque clouds made for a perfect summer’s afternoon doing wedding photography at The Bond, Digbeth.
Whilst the guests enjoyed Peroni and nibbles in the courtyard I whisked Jude and Chris away for some portrait shots. Having been a wedding photographer at The Bond in the past, I was familiar with the array of backdrops the venue has to offer. The expressive Street Art that lines the Grand Union Canal reflects strikingly in the canal surface, creating a fun, vivid and unique setting for photoshoots. It’s what makes the wharf particularly popular for couples and photographers alike.
Another favourite location is the remains of the old Victorian factory. Doing wedding photography at The Bond is something undeniably special. It’s a stunning location, and it’s a pleasure to be able to soak up the historical atmosphere and take a step back in time. The exposed beams and rustic brick walls are so raw and open. It’s difficult not to fall in love with this hidden gem.
Soon everyone gathered in The Gatehouse for the wedding reception, a minimalistic and spacious room brightened with natural light. Jude and Chris chose lovely gold and navy accents for the decorations including a personalised name sign which looked fantastic hung up on the wall. I love picking out the bride and groom’s personal touches, and Jude and Chris’ Polaroid photos of their adventures really brought the whole look together. After speeches were made and hugs exchanged, the guests tucked into some rather decadent-looking cupcakes and took to the dancefloor.
One of my favourite things about doing wedding photography at The Bond is the romantic atmosphere that emerges when the sun starts to set and the glow of the string lights brings everyone out into the cool evening air. The outdoor Canopy area is the perfect place to enjoy a glass or two and sit with friends and family under the stars.
As the evening drew on the skies transformed into stunning purples and blues. I couldn’t resist doing a second newlywed photo shoot with Jude and Chris in the fading daylight. The distant glow of The Canopy lights and the rippled reflections in the water provided a peaceful end to a beautiful day.
